Nigeria's Jonathan set to avoid election run-off

ABUJA - Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has won a big enough share of votes across the country's 36 states to avoid facing an election run-off if he also wins an overall majority, a Reuters tally showed on Sunday.

Under the terms of the constitution, the winner of a presidential election must take a simple majority as well as 25 percent of the vote in two thirds of the country's states.

Results from 30 states declared so far showed Jonathan had already won a quarter of the votes in 24 states.

He had just over 20 million of the total votes counted, well ahead of his nearest rival, ex-military ruler Muhammadu Buhari, who was on around 10 million.
