Obama speech lays agenda for reelection fight

Barack Obama, in one of the biggest speeches of his presidency, pledged to create jobs while cutting spending as he laid the foundation Tuesday for the second half of his term and next year's fight for reelection.
Obama used the State of the Union policy speech to appeal for unity with newly empowered Republicans. He included some of their priorities in his speech. He called for cutting the corporate tax rate, freezing some federal spending, shaking up the federal bureaucracy and eliminating lawmakers' pet projects.
But he also stood firm on issues important to his Democratic base, including defending his biggest legislative accomplishment, a health care overhaul bill, and opposing the privatization of the federal Social Security pension program.
