PCATI slams Knesset commission investigating leftist NGOs

The Public Committee Against Torture in Israel (PCATI) issued a scathing response to the Knesset's approval of an Israel Beiteinu proposal to form a commission of inquiry looking into the activities and sources of financing of left-wing non-governmental organizations on Wednesday.
PCATI's Executive-Director Dr. Ishai Menuchin slammed the politicians initiating the commission, saying: "No human rights organization has succeeded in harming Israel in the way those Israeli politicians who introduce and support such despotic initiatives damage Israeli society."
Menuchin called the initiative "an affront to democratic values." He also directly attacked the initiative's sponsor, MK Fania Kirshenbaum, calling her efforts "an embarrassment." In his statement, he suggested that if Kireshenbaum is worried about Israel's image, "then she should introduce legislation that would end impunity and force all complaints of human rights violations to independently and impartially investigate."
The PCATI executive-director further pondered in his statement, how Diaspora Jewry "would react to such blatant and venomous McCarthyism in their own democracies?"
