Peres: Assad will fall sooner than we think

President Shimon Peres on Monday warned those countries that support Syria that it is not, in fact, Syria they are supporting, but Syrian president Bashar Assad.

"I believe that Assad is reaching his end," Peres told heads of foreign missions in Israel at the annual reception that he hosts for diplomats prior to Rosh Hashana. "It will happen sooner than we think," he predicted.

Peres also referred to Iran and the most recent measures taken by Canada, the United States and the European Union to prevent Iran from continuing with its nuclear project.

They were all looking for ways to thwart Iran's nuclear ambitions without bloodshed, he said, but if these measures prove to be unsuccessful the military option remains on the table.
