Peres calls for serious talks on nurses-Treasury dispute

President Shimon Peres called on the Treasury and the Histadrut to bring a speedy end to the nurses’ sanctions that have caused serious disruptions in public hospitals, clinics and other health facilities during the past four days.

Speaking on Wednesday night at the opening of the 60th anniversary of the first graduating class of the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Medicine in Jerusalem, Peres said the sanctions have already been too long. Women, children, patients and the nurses are all suffering, he added.

Peres, speaking to over 1,000 physicians who graduated from the medical school in the last six decades said Israeli doctors are "moral, caring and very skillful. I salute you!"

The nurses’ sanctions involve wage demands and the demand for recognizing nurses as a "preferred profession" that will bring more benefits.

Talks on Thursday between the Israel Nurses Association brought about no progress.
