Peres gets the gold in Greece

While Israel's athletes lost out on Olympic medals in London,President Shimon Peres on Tuesday scored a gold in the country inwhich the Olympic Games began.

Peres who is on a state visit to Greece was presented with the Gold Medal of the Hellenic Parliament in recognition of his contribution to the global community. It is the second medal that Peres has received in just under two months. In mid June US President Barack Obama presented him with the Medal of Freedom which is America's highest civic award.

The medal awarded to Peres in Greece is in a similar category. In presenting the medal Evangelos Meimarakis, the President of the Greek Parliament said that it was an historic day for the Greek Parliament to have Peres in its midst "a man who has contributed to peace in a region that has been sorely tried." Cooperation between Greece and Israel, he added, represented a strategic choice for peace in the region.
