MK Amir Peretz (Labor) plans to join the Histadrut Labor Federation leadership race, according to Labor sources.
The announcement came following a Histadrut court decision prohibiting MK Eitan Cabel (Labor) from running for the position, because he was not a member of the union for enough time. Cabel is expected to appeal the decision in an external court, and if his candidacy is approved, Peretz will withdraw from the race.Peretz, who led the Histadrut from 1995-2006, denied numerous times that he planned to run for the position of chairman of Israel's largest trade union. However, he repeatedly criticized Labor leader Shelly Yacimovich's decision to support current Histadrut chairman Ofer Eini and not choose a Labor candidate for the job.
Although Peretz supported Eini as his replacement in 2006, the relations between them have grown strained, especially after Eini supported Yacimovich over Peretz in last year's Labor leadership race.
