The high number of African migrants illegally crossing into Israel are a strategic threat, Police Commissioner Insp.-Gen. Yochanan Danino said Tuesday during a visit to Eilat.
Danino, who formally headed the police's southern district, and who has sounded several warnings over the unchecked flow of migrants in the past, called on the government to hasten construction of the border fence.He praised police and army cooperation in the area.
Danino was accompanied by southern district head Cmdr. Yossi Prienti and other senior officers, and looked on as the Navy carried out a drill to tackle simulated terrorist attacks in the region.
The police commissioner also toured Route 12, scene of the terrorist attack last summer which killed eight Israelis, and spoke to local police commanders and officers.
