Israel downgraded the preferential rights of some senior Palestinian Authority officials to pass through the Allenby crossing to Jordan, it was reported on Wednesday.
The coordinator of government activities in the territories said that only the PA chairman and prime minister will be allowed to cross into Jordan in private cars. The two other officials who were granted this privilege previously were Mohammad Dahlan of Fatah and former Palestinian prime minister Ahmed Qurei.
Qurei attempted to cross into Jordan via Allenby in his car late Wednesday, although he was said to have previously known about the decision revoking his privileges. When told that he could cross the border on a bus, he instead decided to return home.
