Report: Iran helping Syria to circumvent oil embargo

Syria has attempted to circumvent sanctions against it by quietly shipping crude oil to Iran, where it can be sold on the world market, with profits going back to Damascus, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing unnamed US officials.
Both the US and Europe have imposed an oil embargo on Syria.
The Wall street Journal quoted a spokesman for the Iranian embassy at the UN as saying that there are no international sanctions against Syria that Tehran must heed.
"Syria is an independent country, and Iran respects its sovereignty," the spokesman stated. "Iran believes that Syrians have the right to self-determination free from any foreign intervention," he added.
