Some 320,000 Israelis consume controlled substances, Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch said Monday.
The data points to a very high usage ratio, with one of every ten teenagers said to be a user.
According to the data, five tons of heroin and four tones of cocaine, as well as 90 tons of hashish and marijuana and 20 million portions of LSD, ecstasy and other 'uppers,' are consumed in Israel every year.
Aharonovitch said the economic damage caused the Israeli economy by drug uses amounts to some NIS 7 billion a year. He called on the government to enlarge the budget of the Israel Anti-Drug Authority to NIS 35 million per year. The agency's budget currently stands at NIS 10 million yearly.
