Shanghai E-bus catches fire while in service

BEIJING - An electric bus caught fire while carrying passengers in downtown Shanghai, Chinese media reported on Wednesday, marking the second such case to be publicized in three months as Beijing pushes for cutting emissions in the world's biggest auto market.
China launched a pilot program in five cities last year to provide subsidies to buyers of electric and hybrid cars, as it stepped up efforts to spur sales of electric vehicles.
The accident took place about midday on Monday as the engine compartment of the bus, made by a company called Shanghai Leibo, caught fire, the China Business News reported. No one was injured, according to Internet portal
More than 10 cities in China have begun trials using E-bus fleets. But high battery costs, an inadequate charging infrastructure and safety issues remain major hurdles that stand in the way of Beijing's ambitious green drive.
