Shots fired at bus in central Israel

Shots were fired at the 39 bus from the Kaviim company traveling between Tira and Netanya in central Israel on Wednesday night, according to the Bus Drivers' Union.

The shots were fired while the bus was at one of the bus stops in Tira after a car blocked the road. As the bus driver moved forward to pass the car blocking the road, a person with their face covered exited the car and began shooting at the bus. The bus driver dropped to the floor and called the police.

Due to the incident, bus service to Tira has been halted.

The incident comes just days after a bus headed to Eilat had stones thrown at it, shattering a window.

According to the Bus Drivers' Union, 3,644 incidents of physical violence against bus drivers were reported in 2020, with the actual number of incidents likely much higher as only 47% of incidents were reported.

The union called for bus drivers to be recognized as public workers.
