Steinitz: Haredim must work; army service less important

Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz on Wednesday announced his plans to increase the number of working haredim.
Speaking at the Caesarea Forum in Nazareth, Steinitz said that his suggested changes to the Tal Law would come in upcoming Knesset budget negotiations .
The minister said that according to his plan, 22-year-old haredim with two children will be exempt from service. Currently exemption applies to 31 year old haredim with five children.
Steinitz added that if more haredim are not put into the work force, the Israeli economy will have a serious problem in less than two decades. The need to have haredim work is more critical to the country than is the need to have them do more army service, he said.
