Teachers to be compensated for broken contracts

The state will spend NIS 150 million to compensate 20,000 teachers after a ruling by the National Labor Court, Israel Radio reported last week. High school teachers’ contracts were broken across the board, the court said.
The Education Ministry unilaterally canceled the collective pay settlement in 2003, claiming that the pension arrangements were not legal.
The courts had previously ruled that the teachers were owed compensation, but the state had until now refused to pay.
