Turkey blasts US ambassador for comments on press freedom

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey's government has criticized the newly-appointed US ambassador for his comments about this country's press freedoms.
Ambassador Francis Riccardione told Turkish reporters that the US is trying "to make sense" of Turkey's stated support for press freedoms and the detention of journalists.
He spoke Tuesday, a day after police raided the home and office of a dissident Turkish journalist and detained him for questioning over an alleged plot to topple the government.
Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Thursday that Riccardione, who formally took up his post on Jan. 28, was wrong to "pass judgment" over an ongoing police investigation and that the detention was not related to press freedoms.
