Two Beduin boys killed after playing with explosive device in Negev

Two cousins, aged 8 and 10, were killed Tuesday night in the Beduin village of Abu Queider after an explosive device they were playing with detonated, police said.
The incident occurred in the unrecognized Beduin village in the Nevatim area in the Negev Desert at approximately 8 p.m. The two children were pronounced dead on the scene by emergency medical responders.
“From a preliminary examination of the police sappers who arrived at the scene the two children were apparently playing with an unexploded ordnance that exploded and caused their deaths,” the Negev District Police said in a statement.
It was unclear how the children obtained the explosive, however some Beduin communities in the Negev are close to IDF bases and residents will periodically come across ammunition.
There are approximately 160,000 Beduin living in the Negev, with about half of that population residing in unrecognized villages.
