UNWRA: Gaza's industry improved but refugees remain concern
By JPOST.COM STAFF
Gaza's construction industry has undergone substantial growth, however, the situation of some 1 million refugees "remains of concern," the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNWRA) stated in a recent report."The Gaza labor market in first-half 2011 was characterized by relatively significant growth in employment and an equally significant decline in unemployment relative to the same period in 2010," UNWRA found. The report attributed the "expanded activity" to the tunnel economy and to "expanded importation of much- needed building materials an other productive inputs."Despite the improvement, however, UNRWA stated that wide-spread unemployment in Gaza at almost 33 percent, "remains among the most severe in the world."
