US criticizes torture of detainees in Kyrgyzstan

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan  — The US Embassy in Kyrgyzstan said it is concerned by growing reports about the torture of detainees by law enforcement officers in the Central Asian nation.
The embassy said in a statement Thursday that Kyrgyz authorities should guarantee fair trials and proper treatment to all detainees.
US misgivings over alleged rights violations come on the heel of fresh claims by activists that security services officers beat and tortured suspects held in connection with a recent bombing in the capital, Bishkek.
Kyrgyzstan has been roiled by turmoil since early last year, when the previous government was toppled in a bloody street uprising provoked by stagnating living standards.
