Yemen's Maarib pipeline repaired

WASHINGTON - Yemen has repaired its main oil pipeline in the Maarib province, which had been shut since a mid-March attack by tribesmen, and oil began to flow on Friday night, the Yemeni Embassy in Washington said in a statement.

"Late Friday evening, Yemeni oil authorities successfully repaired the main pipeline in the province of Mareb," the embassy said in an e-mailed statement.

The embassy said the pipeline, which carries crude oil to Yemen's main oil terminal in Aden for export and to be refined into gasoline, was attacked in mid-March and in June, causing "an acute energy and fuel crisis" in the country.

Yemen is also in the midst of a political crisis after some five months of demonstrations against the three-decade rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who is in Saudi Arabia for medical treatment following a June assassination attempt.
