Yemini to have appeal hearing over hit-and-run conviction

Shalom Yemini, who was sentenced to five years in jail for abandoning the victims of a traffic accident caused by the driver of the car he was riding in, will have an appeal hearing on Thursday before Supreme Court Justice Hanan Melcer.
Yemini was riding in the front passenger seat when his friend, Shai Simon, who was drunk and speeding, drove through a red light and struck Meital Aharonson, who was killed, and Mali Yazdi, who was seriously injured.
Yemini's lawyer, Motti Katz, said his client's punishment was out of proportion to sentences handed down in similar cases and charged that Judge Zvi Gurfinkel had caved in to public pressure.
