Every year, as the launch date of the new iPhone devices approaches, expectations around the camera systems rise. This year, it seems, Apple’s focus in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max series is shifting to the telephoto (zoom) lens. According to the latest rumors, the more expensive models in the series will receive a wider aperture in the zoom lens, an upgrade that will remain exclusive to the Pro line and will not reach the regular models.

The technical meaning of a wider aperture is the lens’s ability to let in a greater amount of light in a short time. Currently, the iPhone’s telephoto cameras perform excellently in full daylight, but tend to struggle when the lighting drops – the result is sometimes a grainy or less sharp image. The expected upgrade is meant to address exactly this point, and to enable sharp, bright, and detailed close-up shots even indoors or during the evening hours, while maintaining the high image quality that characterized the 48-megapixel sensor introduced in the previous generation.

Beyond the exclusivity of the Pro models in the zoom field, it appears that the entire iPhone 18 series will undergo a technological refresh. Reports mention the integration of a variable aperture in the main camera in some of the models, as well as a possible shift to ultra-wide lenses from Samsung instead of Sony.

Although Apple may expand its device lineup and include new models such as the foldable iPhone Fold or the ultra-thin iPhone Air 2, the professional telephoto lens will continue to be the hallmark of the high-end models, creating a clear distinction for users who place photography quality at the top of their priorities.
