The US Geological Survey said the quake was measured at a magnitude of 7.8 and at a depth of 10 km. It said a series of aftershocks followed, measuring up to 5.8.
The researchers were recording the depths when they discovered an unfamiliar pink snailfish swimming just above the seafloor.
