Scientists revive 100 million-year-old microbes from deep under seafloor
Up to 99% of the microbes, dating back to the age of dinosaurs, that were found encased in the sediment survived despite having essentially no nutrients for all that time.
Microbes revived from 101.5 million-year-old sediment cores gathered from deep beneath the seafloor under the Pacific Ocean are seen in an undated magnified image released by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) in Kochi, Japan July 28, 2020.(photo credit: JAMSTEC/HANDOUT VIA REUTERS)ByREUTERS
