Canada: Hijabs allowed at taekwondo tournament

Women will be allowed to wear hijabs at an upcoming tournament in Quebec, a taekwondo federation announced Friday in a decision that followed a recent uproar in which Muslim girls were barred from competing in another tournament because they wore the headscarf. International Taekwondo Federation President Tran Trieu Quan said the authorization is a temporary one because an ad hoc committee will take a closer look at the political and social aspects of allowing women to participate while wearing hijabs. About 700 competitors from more than 60 countries, including Iran and Syria, will be taking part in the World Taekwondo Championships beginning May 31.
