First-ever Chinese delegation observes US wargames

China on Tuesday said its first-ever dispatch of military observers to US exercises in the Pacific Ocean signified a growing emphasis on military-to-military exchanges with Washington. China's participation shows the country has "adopted an active attitude in the development of military relations with the United States," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said at a regularly scheduled news conference. US supporters of such exchanges say they reduce the possibility of future conflicts by impressing on China the advanced capabilities of the US military. Opponents say China takes away valuable lessons about US weapons and tactics that it could apply in future conflicts - including over Taiwan - while revealing little about its own military modernization.
