India may reverse its vote on a resolution putting Iran on notice over its nuclear program if Tehran faces a harsher resolution at an upcoming meeting of the UN atomic agency, the foreign minister said.
India had surprised many and shocked traditional ally Iran by joining the US, Britain, France, Germany and other nations in backing an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolution in September.
The resolution called on the IAEA to consider reporting Iran to the UN Security Council for not complying with the nuclear nonproliferation treaty.
India said it went along with the US and EU in voting against Iran at the September meeting of the IAEA to help prevent a confrontation between Iran and the international community.
However, an unconvinced Iran has threatened to review trade deals with countries that voted against it at the IAEA.
India's vote had also angered the governing Congress party's coalition partners, the leftist parties who had accused the government of selling out to the United States.
