Pakistani security forces freed 21 Iranians after a shootout with kidnappers who had smuggled them across the border, a Pakistani general said Monday.
One kidnapper was killed and 16 captured in the operation shortly before midnight Sunday, said Maj. Gen. Saleem Nawaz, a commander of Pakistan's Frontier Corps.
Pakistani and Iranian officials were investigating the 16 suspects, two of whom were injured in the clash, Nawaz told reporters in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province, which borders Iran.
