Switzerland's banking industry will not automatically block Iranian clients from opening or having a bank account, provided they are not involved with the regime or subject to international sanctions, the head of the Swiss bankers' association said Wednesday.
The US has been putting pressure on financial institutions around the world since last September urging them not to engage in business with Iran, which it accuses of supporting terrorism and developing nuclear weapons.
"Some countries have chosen the route of saying: 'We don't deal with Iran so anybody who has an Iranian passport or who has Iranian nationality, or a corporation based in Iran, we don't deal with,"' Pierre Mirabaud told journalists in Geneva. "In Switzerland we take a slightly different approach."
