Tractor plows into Pakistani school, kills 9

A speeding tractor plowed into a roadside school in eastern Pakistan on Thursday, killing nine children and injuring 18 others, police said. The tractor's driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, which crashed through a perimeter wall of the Thatha Malkaan village school in the eastern province of Punjab, and plowed into dozens of children attending class on the lawn, police officer Shuakat Joya said. Six children were killed at the scene while three others died at a nearby hospital. Eighteen other children were injured, three of them seriously, Joya said. The dead and injured children at the government-run school were aged from 5 to 13 years. Their teacher escaped injury, he said. The driver of the tractor, which was pulling a trailer, fled after the crash and police were looking for him, Joya said. He said the driver was going too fast and listening to loud music when the accident occurred.
