An IDF reservist brigadier-general was removed from his position after being suspected of sexual harassment and indecent acts against female soldiers who served under his command, KAN, Israel's public broadcaster, reported Friday night.
Female IDF soldiers complained, and later told KAN that the reservist had tried to touch them, forcibly hugged them, tried to kiss them, and made indecent propositions to them while the female soldiers served under his command. The officer under suspicion was serving in the reserves for several years as the base commander.
The military prosecutor's office recommended terminating the officer's service following the complaints, the report added. However, he was still seen around the base following the recommendation. When soldiers complained, the representative of the prosecutor's office informed them that he had decided not to stop his reserve service, and the case would continue to be handled.
"I'm sorry, we were told that they don't have anyone to replace him at this time. I understand the feelings, we also saw it differently, but the brigadier general is required to consider additional considerations during this period," the office said, according to the report.
The IDF said that the reservist officer eventually terminated his duties a few days ago.
"He was investigated by the military police on suspicion of crimes of indecent assault and sexual harassment, and the investigation has concluded," the IDF said. "The officer was recently summoned by the military prosecution for a hearing before filing an indictment. In accordance with the recommendation of the military prosecutor's office, the officer was summoned for a conversation with the commander of the Northern Command, where it was decided to terminate the officer's duties."
Separate, but similar incident involving reservist
A separate incident in March saw another IDF reservist, who was indicted for sexual assault against a female soldier, according to another report by KAN. The reservist had been called up for an exercise and was asked by the base commander to drive home a female soldier.
According to the indictment, the reservist touched the soldier and showed her explicit photos of himself.
