Tel Aviv University plans to rename its Faculty of Exact Sciences, which currently carries the Sackler family name, as part of an effort to secure a major new donation for research and teaching.
The initiative is being carried out with the approval of the Sackler family, according to university President Prof. Ariel Porat. The university said the funds would support research and teaching in physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science and geophysics.
Porat said the planned name change does not diminish the Sackler family’s historical contribution to the university, which has included support for research across several scientific fields.
“The Sackler family’s contributions over the years laid the foundation for research and exceptional scientific achievements across a range of scientific fields. The Sackler family has assisted Tel Aviv University in this renaming initiative with the intention of helping the University secure a significant new donation to strengthen research and teaching in the exact sciences for the benefit of the State of Israel and beyond,” Porat said.
The university said the move follows a similar process carried out several years ago at its Faculty of Medicine, also in cooperation with the Sackler family. The faculty was subsequently renamed for the Gray family following a $125 million donation to Tel Aviv University, described by the university as an unprecedented gift.
This version removes phrases like “position the University at the forefront of global scientific research” and “major philanthropic commitment,” which make it read more like institutional copy.
