By HANNAH BROWNUpdated: DECEMBER 18, 2018 22:16Skin, a short film by Guy Nattiv, an Israeli director working in the US, made the shortlist for the Oscar nominations for Best Live-Action Short Film.The movie, which stars Jamie Bell (Defiance, Billy Elliot), is a fact-based drama set in America about a skinhead who ends up rejecting racial hatred. Nattiv has directed the award-winning Israeli films Mabul, Strangers and Magic Men.Ten films were chosen for the shortlist out of 140 that were eligible.Israel did not fare as well this year in other categories. Israel’s official entry for consideration for a Best Foreign Language Film Award, Ofir Raul Graizer’s The Cakemaker, did not make the shortlist of nine films.This year’s Foreign Language shortlist features movies from Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Colombia, Denmark, Germany, Kazakhstan, Lebanon and Poland. Alfonso Cuaron’s Roma is heavily favored to win this year. In the past, Israel has had 10 films nominated in this category but has never won. It is the country with the most nominations without a win.Two eligible documentaries by Israeli filmmakers, which are not official Israeli entries as is the case in the Best Foreign Language category, also did not make the Best Documentary shortlist.Five nominees in each category will be announced on January 22.
