IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir on Sunday decided to issue sanctions, as well as place direct responsibility on several high-ranking current and former generals who served during the October 7 massacre.
According to N12, Zamir dismissed Gaza Division's Intelligence Officer, Lt.-Col. 'A, in a meeting between the two as part of the first wave of sanctions inflicted on commanders who the IDF chief sees as bearing personal responsibility for the security failures leading to the attack.
An official statement detailing the identities of the summoned officers is expected to be released later today. This follows the comprehensive probe released two weeks ago by a review team into the failures of October 7.
When discussing the investigation's results, Zamir stated, "The failure on October 7 was a systemic failure and not a tactical, momentary one."
Essential to reinforce public confidence
The review team determined that it would not be possible to move forward in light of the findings without personal measures against those involved.
Some of the officers are still in active service, while others have resigned or been discharged. A range of measures will be taken against those still in active service, depending on the level of responsibility determined for each officer.
The IDF stated that these measures are essential to strengthen trust among soldiers and to reinforce public confidence in the IDF.
Meetings will also be held with lower-ranking officers by the deputy chief of staff.
Netanyahu and Zamir clashed last week over General Staff appointments, with the prime minister and the defense minister insisting on appointing Military Secretary Brig.-Gen. Guy Markizano, the military attaché in Washington, while the chief of staff opposes the move.
Walla reported that the prime minister informed the chief of staff that he has not changed his position on the issue.
According to assessments within the IDF, Zamir's decisions regarding the implications of the investigations on the senior officer corps will affect the General Staff appointments, paving the way for Markizano to assume the attache position.
This is a developing story.
