Two years after he stabbed a man to death on a Tel Aviv beach for refusing to give him a cigarette, Gili Shmila was sentenced to no less than 20 years in jail Monday, the maximum sentence for his crime.
Originally charged with murder, Shmila, 21 later confessed to aggravated manslaughter as part of a plea bargain. However, the judges ruled that the killing of Sa'id Badarna, 22, was nearly classifiable as murder, and therefore handed down the maximum sentence.
