Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann's new initiative on civil marriage is a trick that doesn't signify the establishment of civil marriage, but rather the further isolation of and discrimination against new olim from the former Soviet Union who are not considered Jewish, Meretz chairman Yossi Beilin said Wednesday.
Beilin spoke in response to a recent move on Friedmann's part that would allow civil marriages only in cases where neither partner is Jewish according to the halacha.
