A security guard was killed and one was seriously wounded in an attempted armed robbery of a Holon supermarket early Friday morning. Two masked men arrived on motorbikes at the "Hetzi Hinam" shop with pistols drawn and forced two workers to open the locked gates. The robbers then tried to approach the tills but were prevented from doing so by the two security guards. A short-range gunfight then ensued in which one of the guards was killed and one seriously wounded. Several of the supermarket workers then attacked one of the bandits with a knife, moderately wounding him. The masked man was evacuated for medical treatment before being arrested by police. The second robber fled the scene. "One of the robbers, who is now in our custody, is wounded," confirmed Ayalon Police Commander Asst.-Cmdr. Aharon Aksol. "From the accounts of those who were at the scene, we know that a struggle broke out involving punches and a stabbing," continued Aksol, adding, "the security guards showed great courage and didn't give in." The murdered security guard was later identified as Yom Tov Douek, 56, from Bat Yam. Police said that close circuit television footage of the incident proved the validity of the statements. Eliko, one of the owners of the security company, said that his employees were not trained to deal with an armed robbery but only for terrorist attacks with nationalist motives. "We are shocked that security guards who protect us against a terror attack are murdered by our own people," Eliko told Army Radio. "On the eve of the festival of freedom in Israel… this is a tragic festival eve for Israeli society that is severely deteriorating," continued the traumatized Eliko.
