Itzik to push for cancelling election day off

Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik intends to convene a special session of the Knesset as early as this week to pass legislation cancelling the legal holiday on election day. Itzik said the high turnout in last Tuesday's municipal elections proved that it was unnecessary to have a vacation day to enable people to vote. She estimated that the legislation could save the economy one billion to one and a half billion shekels that would be lost due to the work force staying home. Her associates expressed confidence that she would be able to pass the bill. Israel is one of the only countries in the world that holds its elections on a weekday and makes it a legal holiday.
