Israel Beiteinu's Strategic Affairs Ministers Avigdor Lieberman called Saturday for Israel to allow Nayef Hawatmeh, Damascus-based founder and leader of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, to enter the Palestinian territories so that he could be tried for murder, Israel Radio reported.
On Friday, Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilna'i said that since Hawatmeh wouldn't be entering Israel and would be in the Palestinian Authority for a short time only, Israel should weigh permitting him to visit.
Hawatmeh was planning to participate in Wednesday's Palestine Liberation Organization's Central Assembly meeting, organized by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in an effort to unite all the Palestinian factions against Hamas.
Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Tzahi Hanegbi wrote to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert asking him to ensure Hawatmeh was not permitted to enter the PA as he was responsible for the terror attack in Ma'alot and for murdering other civilians.
