A 17-year-old was stabbed to death in Rishon Lezion's industrial zone overnight Friday. The victim, Ya'akov Getta, of Ethiopian origin was a resident of Lod. Police said that the teen was apparently attacked during an argument and was taken to Asaf Harofe Hospital, where he died of his wounds. A 20-year-old young man, who had been suspected of the murder, turned himself into the police on Saturday. The suspect will be brought to the local court Sunday morning where the police will seek a remand extension. Rishon Lezion's chief police superintendent lamented that "while we are dispatched to the area nightly, the officers who were near the site of the murder, regretfully, didn't see the altercation." The chief further mentioned that the industrial area is a well-known place where young people congregate- often times being intoxicated after leaving nearby nightclubs- and where brawls frequently occur. The city's mayor, Meir Nitzan, was furious after hearing about the incident, saying that what occurred was very "serious" and that while the police cannot always ensure that crimes will not occur, that the "municipality works in conjunction with the police in an attempt to prevent such incidents." Nitzan further stated that he and his staff were looking into the possibility of sealing the area and having each entrant checked for weapons' possession.
