In yet another case of corruption at the state level, three National Insurance Institute officials were arrested Monday on suspicion of accepting bribes, fraud, and breach of trust. Those arrested included the NII's deputy-director of logistics, the director of the NII's logistics branch, and the former acting director of the NII, who also served as chairman of the NII's tender committee. A fourth suspect allegedly served as a go-between for the other three officials and applicants for NII tenders, who reportedly bribed all four suspects in return for inside information that would guarantee them NII bids. Police apprehended the four following an undercover investigation, and members of the Financial Crimes Unit were also searching the suspects' homes. According to police, the sums paid reached hundreds of thousands of shekels, and, in certain cases, hundreds of thousands of dollars.
