Not only is El Al flying on Shabbat, but it has been serving non-kosher food, Army Radio reported on Tuesday. Less than 24 hours after the haredi community called to boycott the airline for allowing Shabbat flights, which were meant to make up for delays caused by last week's general public sector strike, it was discovered that non-kosher sandwiches were served on a Thursday flight from Moscow to Israel.
  • Haredim rage over El Al Shabbat flight The sandwiches were served after flight officials realized that the kosher food brought from Israel had spoiled due to the plane's long stay at the Moscow airport as it was unable to depart due to the strike in Israel. El Al responded, saying that passengers had been told in advance that the sandwiches had been bought in Moscow and were not kosher, and that fruit had also been distributed as a substitute for the kosher food. On Monday night, El Al Director-General Chaim Romano said that he would not rule out the possibility of more Shabbat flights in extenuating circumstances. "Remember that the international airport operates every day of the year, and I expect the religious community to have consideration for us the way we have had consideration for them all these years," he said.
