Zevulun Police opened an investigation Wednesday into claims that an IDF soldier sent an SMS to his father saying that he had been kidnapped but was later found in his car. The soldier, a resident of the center of the country, was considered to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time that the message was sent. According to police involved in the investigation, the growing assumption is that the act was meant as a prank. Details of the police investigation have been sent to the IDF and legal proceedings against the soldier have begun. Last year, following a slew of kidnappings that included the abduction of Cpl. Gilad Shalit at Kerem Shalom, another IDF soldier was penalized after he falsely blamed his lateness to his army base on a Palestinian kidnapping attempt.
