Quartet envoy James Wolfensohn said on Tuesday evening that Israel's security needs could be met even if the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt remained open.
Wolfensohn mentioned that the agreement reached between the Palestinians and Israel defined a period of at least six hours in which the Palestinians must detain anyone whom Israel deemed dangerous. In a Channel 10 interview, the envoy encouraged cooperation and sharing of information regarding suspicious people attempting to cross the border.
He blamed the difficulties in advancing the negotiations between the two parties on the "acute mutual suspicion" between them.
