NIS 80 million to upgrade purification plant

Plant manager said after the upgrade it will put the plant in the "top ranks" of purification plants around the world.

The municipal union for Haifa has approved a plan to upgrade the local sewage purification plant at a cost of NIS 80 million, reports Yediot Haifa. Plant manager Ami Ben-Haim said the work, which will take three years to complete, will put the plant in the "top ranks" of purification plants around the world. According to the report, the plant treated some 35.5 million cubic meters of waste in 2007, returning 99 percent of this volume to agriculture. Ben-Haim said upgrading the plant would enable it to treat nitrogen and phosphorus, and would result in the highest-quality treated waste, of sufficient quality that it could be used both for agriculture and to refill the Kishon River.
