Ataa Jaber, a soccer player born to an Israeli-Muslim family, reposted an infographic from Al Jazeera celebrating the Global Sumud Flotilla in a Saturday Instagram story seen by The Jerusalem Post.

The flotilla, consisting of activists including Greta Thunberg, is sailing from Spain, attempting to breach the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Jaber was previously the captain of Israel's under-21 national soccer team, but switched to represent the Palestinian national team in 2023.

He began his career in Maccabi Haifa's youth team and also played for other Israeli clubs, including the Israeli-Arab team Bnei Sakhnin and FC Ashdod. He currently plays for Doha-based Qatar Sports Club.

At the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war, in the aftermath of October 7, Jaber called for the observation of a minute of silence for Gaza in November 2023.

Request made in 2023 to revoke Jaber's Israeli citizenship

This led to Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar requesting that then-interior minister Moshe Arbel revoke Jaber's Israeli citizenship due to support for Hamas terrorists.

"It is impossible that in the midst of the war in Gaza, an Israeli citizen would choose to identify with the enemy who massacred and murdered over 1,300 men, women, and babies on Oct. 7, 2023," Zohar commented at the time.
