Explosions rocked central Baghdad mid-afternoon Thursday, and smoke billowed over the American-guarded Green Zone.
A witness inside the zone, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of his job, said about half a dozen mortars fell in the area.
The Green Zone houses the US and British embassies, as well as offices of the Iraqi government.
The US military said it had no immediate information about the attack.
