Former Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniyeh told the British daily the Guardian that the British government had expanded its dealings with Hamas since the release of BBC correspondent Alan Johnston.
"I cannot deny that there are now other contacts, other channels of communication with the UK and these involve people of high rank," the former Hamas prime minister said.
Officials at the British consulate in Jerusalem denied the existence of political links with Hamas, which is on the UK's list of terror organizations, telling the Guardian that all contacts had been purely "humanitarian and consular".
