Iranians celebrated the death of reportedly assassinated Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday evening.

Footage from social media showed people lighting off fireworks from their balconies and calling out to each other from their apartments.

Other videos shared on social media show Iranians cheering as planes or missiles pass overhead.

One video, sent directly to Iran International, reportedly features an Iranian citizen saying: “This war is not our war. It’s Trump’s war with the hateful Islamic regime. We pray that Trump wins this war, because if he wins, the people of Iran will be free.”

Mass celebration in LA by Iranian immigrants

The Los Angeles Times reported widespread celebration over Khamenei's death by the local population of Iranians, particularly in Westwood.

According to the Times, the Greater Los Angeles area hosts the largest population of Iranians outside of Iran itself, with almost 140,000 living in just Los Angeles County.

Many of those marching in celebration also called for Iranian Crown Prince Reza Pahlavai to take over as leader of the country.

One Jewish-Iranian couple who spoke to the Times expressed their excitement about the event.

“Our whole lives we’ve had to navigate our different identities, coming from both Persian and Jewish backgrounds,” they said. “Today we see one step forward.”
