The UN Security Council and Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday condemned in the strongest terms the "terrorist attack" targeting UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon and demanded the perpetrators be brought to justice.
In separate statements, the council and Ban extended deepest condolences to families of the six peacekeepers from the Spanish contingent killed Sunday when a bomb hit their armored personnel carrier. Three of those killed were Spaniards and the other three were Colombians.
Two other peacekeepers with the UN mission in southern Lebanon were seriously injured.
Ban noted the fragility of the situation in Lebanon and reiterated the importance of the UN force, known as UNIFIL, in helping maintain stability in southern Lebanon.
"Targeting of UNIFIL is in fact an attempt to undermine peace and security in the region and in particular the Lebanese and international efforts to stabilize the situation in southern Lebanon within the framework of UN Security Council Resolution 1701," Ban's spokeswoman Michele Montas said in a statement.
